I've been trying to adopt a dog and have tried with different animal shelters. I fill out their "application" on line and they don't respond for months!!?? Then...by that time ...the dog I'm interested in, is dead or gone. They don't list their phone numbers or addresses so I can't drop in. It's like they don't want to adopt them out? Any Rescue People that can answer why? I know their busy, but I'd think they'd have someone assigned to responded to the applications so they can adopt them out.

Wow! I walked into a shelter, filled out some paperwork, paid the fee and walked out with my dog. Maybe you should actually go there. That way you can see the animal's temperament and activity level anyway.

Please save a life, and go to a shelter that puts the animals to sleep.

If you want a pet, go to your local animal shelter. I don't know any reputable animal placement agency that would be satisfied to adopt out an animal without some personal contact.

Some agencies have web sites, with pictures, but that doesn't mean the pet in the photo is actually still there. The bulk of their time is spent caring for the animals at the shelter. Updating the internet site is way down on the list of things to do.

As far as I know, there is a Humane Society or SPCA in just about every county in the country. Take a drive over and see what is available. If they like you, you can even give them an idea of what you are looking for and go on their waiting list. Unfortunately, there are few purebreds available at shelters, and the rescue organizations get really picky about where they place the purebreds that come their way. Most of these animals have already been through a really bad home and they are extra careful to make sure the next one the pet goes to is the best possible place for them.

I don't know of any SPCA branch that does not list their addresses in the phone book, the Internet, and often times the news paper. Going to adoption days at local pet stores... (I KNOW for a fact that petco and petsmart both have multiple agencies that adopt all day on Saturdays and Sundays), or physically go down to the shelter and fill out an application in person.

Most of these adoptions are very sparsely staffed due to the fact that they are not for profit. This being said, the likelihood that someone will be catching every Internet request is slim. If you really truly want to adopt you will find a way. petfinder.org is also a good place to start.

People who work in rescue do so by volunteer time only, so most are horribly understaffed, and honestly most are run by only one or two people. They probably had other people apply for the same dog that you did, and in the rescue's eyes, the other people were a better match. They don't have to let you know if someone else adopted the dog, of course it would be common courtesy but that doesn't mean they have to do it.

Also....you said you were applying online. They really like people to be more proactive and really SHOW that they are interested in adopting. Make an appointment to go and SEE the dogs....you should want to do that anyway to see which dog would be a good fit for you. They may not be taking you seriously since you are applying online. And rescues take their adoptions VERY seriously.

As has been mentioned; a lot of shelters are severely understaffed. Many places are run by people who also have fulltime jobs and then do the animal shelter after hours. The place I volunteered at was run by donation only. The 50 or so cats we cared for took at least 2 hours in the morning and evening to feed and clean their cages. The person who runs it does it out of her own home and cannot sit around waiting for adoptive people to possibly come so she sets up interviews by appointment only. Even then, her phone rings at 3am by people wanting to come by to look at a cat NOW.

Its possible that your application is either a) being rejected for some reason b) the pet place isnt legit and your info is being sold c) the shelters are running behind caring for the animals.

I know it may seem weird that shelters want to adopt out and paperwork comes last since it helps adopt out...but the animals that are there take priority. We need to make sure they care cared for properly or they will lose their right to have a shelter when the inspectors come by.

I'm not sure what kind of ceneters you're talking about. If there are no phone numbers or addresses, then it may not be a legitimate rescue center. Good rescue centers will have fully detailed websites with several ways to contact them. I would recommend going to your local animal shelter to interact with the animals and see which would be the best fit for you. Just because an animal looks cute doesn't mean that it doesn't have behavioral issues. And yes, rescue centers will adopt animals out with behavior issues, such as brking, obsessiveness, and dominance issues.

I can totally relate to this--it took me weeks of sending e-mails every day to get a cat I wanted. Unfortunately, paperwork is probably the hardest position to fill, which kinda defeats the purpose of trying to find homes for all these animals. Maybe you could help by offering your time to screen some applicants, which would also give YOU the first opportunity to see the pets as they become available.
