Dont use detergent, it will become slippery, use rock salt, melts the ice and keeps it melted

Never heard of a detergent to de-ice. Use kitty litter or rock salt.

Oh geez, I can just picture that... Grandma coming to visit and slipping ona slick step full of ice and SLIPPERY SOAP and SURFACTANT!
How about some salt some sand, or maybe some chain mesh? Unless you just WANT a broken hip for Grandma....

I do not know about detergent for this problem. My recommendation is that you attach some asphalt shingles with grit that creates some traction. nail them down , one for each step.
