I am due tomorrow, and I've gotten really worried in the past couple of days, I've even gone into the hospital and all they do is call my doctor and he tells them to send me home (which really annoys me). But I'm only 1 cm and 100% effaced, and -2, what does that all mean? I'm really confused and I can't get anyone answer me at the hospital.
What is going on?

Isn't it true that some women don't ever dialate? And that they can't have a natrual birth?

I know my friend only dialated to 2 cm after 2 days of labor.

I'm 1 cm dialated. I'm still really worried that I won't dialate.

Okay, yes this is my first child, and yes I know that its only an estimate but as the one woman said " we women know our bodies" so why won't people trust me when I say something is wrong, I feel something is wrong.

This is probably my one and only blessed baby. And I'm just really nervous and scared.

Ok, first of all, due dates are an estimate, so I wouldn't worry yet- most Doctors won't let you go more than 10 days over. OK- here is the deal.
1cm is how "open" your cervix is. Imagine it is like a balloon- the end will open to a 10, right now it is only a 1. it isn't actually 10cm on all women, but they use that as a loose measure.
100% effaced is a great start. Think of your cervix opening like a turtleneck sweater. The more effaced you are the thinner it is (like the neck of the sweater is rolled down, creating a shorter canal for the baby)
-2 is the easiest really. Think of the bones in your pelvis. There is a little section that jabs towards the middle, this is 0 station, the goal is to be at +2. It is the position of the babies head, in relation to your cervix. So at -2, he hasn't dropped into position yet. He will move lower and lower until he is at a +2, and ready to be delivered.

Your doctor will help you plan this, but if you do not dialate in a few more days, there is a pill they can give you (in the hospital) that they put on the cervix to help it open (cm). If that doesn't work, they will either give you an IV to induce, or they will manually break your water, which will usually get your cervix opening.

While I am sure that there are women who don't dialate, don't worry about that yet- it sounds like your cervix is doing what it needs to, but that the baby isn't quite ready yet! My first born dropped out when I was only 7cm- trust this, you DONT want that!!

Your due date is just an estimate based on exactly 40 weeks from the date of your last menstrual period. However, most babies are actually not born on their due date, and babies can be born healthy for a couple of weeks after a due date, so don't worry too much. There's nothing they can do for you at the hospital, except possibly induce labor. While that may seem like a wonderful option, the fact is that unless the baby seems to be in distress, women should be allowed to go after their due dates. Babies generally know when they should be born, and they don't care a whole heck of a lot about their actual due dates.
It is possible that you won't dilate. My water broken and even after 24 hours after that and active labor, I didn't dilate. However, don't worry about that either- they can always do a c-section if you do not dilate and they feel that either you or the baby are in any type of danger.

If you're still worried, go to babycenter.com. They've got lots of great info. on pregnancy, childbirth, etc.

1cm means that you're 1 cm dilated. 100% effaced is wonderful, that means that your cervix is completely thinned out. -2 is how low the baby is in your pelvis, which I don't think is too low, he has to drop a bit more. Sadly it is true that some women just don't dilate enough to give birth vaginally. BUT, Don't worry, I highly doubt that will happen. I was dilated 2 cm and 75% effaced for 2 weeks before I gave birth to my son. I didn't even start feeling the contractions until I was 3cm. You'll be fine, just relax, you still have two weeks before you're considered overdue. You're doing great.

Yes it is true that some people cannot dialate. My mother when she had me and my sister couldn't dialate she was in labor for almost 48 hours with both of us and she only could get to 2 cm. They had to do a c-section. It is possible but not as common as a natural birth. And 1 cm means that you are 1 cm dialated. Don't worry that you won't dialate. When i gave birth i felt that i was leaking fluid and the doctor checked me out and sent me home he said it was nothing....and i was only not even 1 cm dialated.....well i went home and 4 hours later i was in labor......i told him i knew i was leaking amniotic fluid......we women know our bodies.

First you may not be ready to have the baby yet. Just because the doctor estimated your due date for tomorrow, that doesn't mean that the baby will come tomorrow. It sounds like the baby is due very soon, as 100% effacement means that your cervix is very thin and ready to allow the baby to push through. In a first time pregnancy, your cervix will efface before you begin to dilate, so the 1cm dilation means that you have just begun to dilate. I would be willing to guess that baby will arrive before the weekend. I know it's easy for me to say, but sit back, relax and wait for those first signs of labor, they will come quick enough.

the -2 is what called the station, or whether your bub has engaged. A -2 means they haven't engaged yet. Is this your first child? Normally the whole birth process takes longer with your first as your body has never birthed before. It's actually not that common to deliver on the exact day your due, so your active labour may not start for a few days, that's why you're only 1cm dilated.

-2 means the baby hasnt dropped down yet i know the feeling but dont worry but the weekend baby will be here walk around alot to get baby to drop gravity thing good luck 1 cm means that the hole where the baby comes out is open 1 cm -- and 100%effaced means that the thick of the cervix is completely thinned out your really close mother of 3 and they can make you dilate
they just give you an iv withsome medicine it is called induce lador it will make you dilate

I was sent home from the hospital 3 times with my first child. I didn't dialte quickly and my water wouldn't break. You realize of course that your "due" date is only an estimation. If you're not dialating and your doctor feels you should be, they can induce labor and break your water. I've had 2 kids and they had to break my water both times.

Calm down! Nothing good ever came from being so tensed up. Give your body a chance to do its job. And I know this is going to sound crazy to you right now, but try to enjoy the rest of your pregnancy, you'll wish you still were when youre up all hours of the night with your crying baby. One day past your due date is not really overdue, remember that is just an estimate.

A due date is just an estimate that will tell you APPROXIMATELY when your baby will be born. It is not bad if you give birth shortly before or after...you can't freak out because you haven't given birth on or before your due date. Your baby will come when it's good and ready...quit freaking out. If, at some point in the near future, your doctor thinks you need some help getting labour started, he/she will decide to have you induced, which will make you dilate further and bring on the contractions. Be patient.
