There is only one step. Take the quadratic formula and plug in the numbers.

If ax^2 + bx + c = 0,
x = (-b +/- sqrt(b^2-4ac))/2a

For the equation you gave, a=1, b=19, c=88. Plug those numbers in and see what you get.

If you're confused by the +/-, it's shorthand for writing two things in one. There are usually two values of x that work, one with + and one with -.

x^ 2 +19x + 88 = 0
(x +8)(x+11) = 0
8*11=88 8+11 = 19
x +8 =0 x+11 = 0 (solve for x)
-8 =-8 -11 = -11
x= -8 x= -11
Then place -8 in place of x to see if -8 is a solution for the equation
Next place -11 in place of x to see if -11 is a solution for the equation
Both -8 and -11 will work out

EX. X^2 +19X + 88 = 0
-8^2 + 19(-8) +88 =0
64 -152 +88 =0
0 = 0
X^2 + 19X +88 = 0
-11^2 +19(-11) +88 = 0
121 - 209 +88 =0
0 =0

Try factoring first. Put x's in the left position of each parenthesis. (x )(x )=0. This produces x^2. Now two numbers when multiplied give 88 and add up to 19 are-- 8 and 11. So (x+8)(x+11)=0. Set each ( ) = 0 and you get x+8=0 and x+11=0. The answers are x= -8 and x= -11. This is the FOIL method. First, Outer, Inner and Last terms!

This one is easy to factor out. Basically, you need two numbers that when multiplied give 88, but when added give you 19. (8 and 11 work)

(x+8)(x+11)=0

Now take each piece and set it to zero, then solve for x. You will have two answers. TEST them both, one at a time in the original equation. Sometimes you end up w/one of them that doesn't work, but that's ok.

x=[-b(+ or -) the square root of b squared - 4ac]/2a

If that makes sense.
a represents the variable next to x^2, which in this case is 1. b represents the number next to x, which here is 19. c represents the number with no variables, which here is 88. You plug these into the equation, and you will eventually get two possible answers: one where you used a plus on top and one where you used the minus.

Hope this helps.
