(x+6)(x-6)= x^2+6x-6x-36= x^2-36

so k should be equal to 0. k=0

It is not possible to "solve" this because it is simply a mathematical expression, not a mathematical equation. It is only one half of an equation, it needs to be set equal to something else in order to have a solution.

However, since it looks like part of a quadratic equation, I'll aproach it as such.

A quadratic equation is an equation in the form "ax^2 + bx + c = 0" -- in such an equation, the value of x can be found using the quadratic formula:

x = [-b +- (sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))] / 2a

In this case, a = 1, b = "k", and c = -36

so,

x = [-k +- (sqrt(k^2-{4*1*-36})] / 2a
x = [-k +- (sqrt(k^2-{-144})] / 2(1)
x = [-k +- (sqrt(k^2+144)] / 2

That "+-" means "plus or minus," in other words there are two solutions:

x = [-k + (sqrt(k^2+144)] / 2
and
x = [-k - (sqrt(k^2+144)] / 2

(x+6)(x-6)
x2+2*6*x-36
x2+12x-36
k = 12
