By the saying that they mean that at forty you know a lot more about yourself and the world and how to make yourself happy. That's all. People who are forty know full well that half of their life is over. Honey, I am 56 and I never have felt better!

Wait until you reach forty, you won't feel that way then. Life is better at middle age. My son is grown, married and makes his own living. This gives me more money to do with as I please. I used to spend all my money on him and his after school activities, clothes, trips, entertainment, and FOOD(good Lord the boy could eat). I had to give up doing things that I wanted to do because he and his needs and wants came first. I don't begrudge him any of the sacrifices that I made on his behalf because I love him and wanted him to have and experience as much as I could give him. I have more time to do the things I want to do now. I own a house, have a nice car, go places with my friends and my boyfriend. There is a sense of freedom now that I didn't have when I was a young single parent.Don't knock middle age until you've been there. So far, it's great.

It all depends on your perspective. You probably think the glass is half empty, not half full. You may be a pessimist, where as I am an optimist. I think, at 49, that I still have a lot of living to do and when these kids are gone to college in just a few years, whoppee!!! My hunny & me will be free! oh, yea baby! :) I also don't think of the quantity but the quality. My son only lived 22 years, but his life was rich and full and now he's in Heaven. So, it's all perspective. :)

by the time we reach forty most of us have raised our children, have a career, and a home. with luck the kids have moved out, so you have the house to yourself. this is when you can start enjoying life without all the little annoyances.

in theory anyway.

Your life really "does begin at 40". My doctor explained it to me, that by the time you hit 40 your body, metabolism, all that stuff goes through changes again. You can even redevelope allergies you had as a kid (I know someone that actually happened to). So it's kinda like when you were entering your teens and you went through all the chemical changes, etc. This is where the "life begins..." expression came from. As far as other stuff at 40? It DOES get better, even more so at 50, and I'm looking hard at 60! It just keeps getting better!

I think maybe you are taking this statement the wrong way . When someone says life starts at 40 they mean you are finally established enough to really start living . The kids are grown or what ever and your life is your own .
