I swear by Kotex Maxi Wing during the day and Kotex Overnight Wing during the night for the first three days for heavy flow. For the remaining days, I use any slim pads or just pantyliners as the flow is lighter.
I won't really encourage you to use tampon just yet. But if you have an older sister/cousin around, perhaps they can show you how do 'get it in' coz it can be sometimes tricky and some gilrs might need a few rounds of practice before they get the hang of it. Lord knows, I had some problems myself but after awhile it's not so bad.
But really, if this is your first time, it's better to use pads, just to save you a lot hassles. Whenever you feel ready, you can move onto the tampons and see if it suits you. Just remember to not go swimming when you have your period whilst using pads! :)

ok well it really depends on you and what your comfortable with. you can try a few diffrent ones and find out what is best for you. me when using pads i like always extra thin they protect good and they are thin but you will have to deside rather you are having a light day or heavy and get the one that has the obsorbancy protection you need. and for a tampon i would advice using ob they are very small but work great they have no applicator but easy to insert. and sence there is no applicator you have to place correctly your more likely to get in right the first try.and like i said they are small so you can just carry one in your pocket and no one knows your carring one. and when to change a pad i always change it when i feel wet cant stand feeling wet, and every time i go to the bathroom. and for a tampon you also have to pick the one with the obsorbancy that fits your period a plus on tampons you can buy a multi pack that already has diffrent obsorbancies in the box. and its a good idea to change them every 4 hrs and or when you go to the bathroom. and a tampon when placed right will not cause any discomfort and when using a tampon correctly you shouldnt even feel it and no using tampons cant damage anything if you use one that lets say is a super for an extremley heavy period when you should be using a lite on can but very rare can case tss and here is alink for info on that but that is the only way a tampon can cause any harm and like i said it is extremley rare hope this helps

Well first of all congrats on becoming a women now,but don't get scared and freaked out over this,it's not a big deal it's just a part of nature.I started in the sixth grade also,so I know how your feeling. But the best pads I found for me is Alway's with wing's,I don't suggest tampon's,because to me they are very
uncomfortable, and on the size of pad will depend on the flow of your period, you will have to determine that. And on how frequent you should change your pad depends on how much of a flow you have also, then on the last couple of day's you should use panty liners to save on your regular pads. And every women is different on the amount of day's you will have a period, should be somewhere between 3-7 Day's.And please now that you have started, when ever you start having sex, please be very cautious and use protection, because now that you have started your period you will be able to get pregnat very easy now.Sorry not trying to be your mother, just wanting to give you good advice on that just incase no one has ever told you that.Take Care and Good Luck on becoming a Women.
P.S.Forgot to tell you if you get cramps with this you can use tylenol,or Midol ( My Fav) and if that doesn't alway's work you can use a heating pad also, you may also experience mood swing's & craving chocolate also.

Any brand of pads would work just fine, just make sure they are the kind with the wings on the side, otherwise you might have an accident with your panties(seriously, they are better). You should get used to the pads first before trying tampons because they are kind of weird the first few times you try to use them. And try not to use pads that are fat because they are uncomfortable. You should change the pad whenever it is about halfway(full?) or so. Hope this is of some help to you!=)

I suggest that u shouldn't use tampons yet only pads (any brand would do) you should have your period for atleast one year. Before using tampons. So you know your what your period flow is. Light Regular or super. Since you just started. You don't know your flow yet. Stick with pads Then when you get know how your cycles begin and end then you can began using tampons. This reason is because if you wear the wrong flow size tampon you can get whats called TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) Which is a rare but serious and sometimes fatal disease associated with tampon use. So please do be careful if you use tampons. Hope this helps. And welcome to being a woman.

Kotex is the best brand..and it really isnt good to use tampons at teens age or younger because it could damage stuff...and to change pads i think it is every 4 hours and for tampons if you dont change it within 4 hours you can get really sick...hope that helps

I personally wont use any pads but Always and when I use tampons it's always Playtex. As far as changing them, it depends on when they're ready to be changed, but NEVER EVER keep a tampon in any longer than 8 hours.

Always is a good brand, I suppose..
You should switch to tampons as soon as you feel ready to use them. They make things much easier.
