I just have a few comments based on my first year:

1) Keep up with the reading. It gets very difficult to catch up if you fall behind.
2) Go to class. The majority of the test will be about things you go over in class. It doesn't matter what the casebook says if your professor either doesn't agree with it or doesn't know it says it. For 1L classes, the professor might not be an expert an expert on the casebook.
3) Be wary of commercial outlines and study guides. Tests cover what the professors teach in class. Commercial outlines and study guides do not necessarily correspond with the class. If you know you covered something in class but don't understand it, you might want to use study aids, but I wouldn't recommend using them as a primary source for exam preparation
4) Start preparing for finals early (1-1.5 months before finals week). It takes a long time to digest a whole semester's worth of material.
5) On exams, break your answer down into sections and subsections (with headings) that progress step by step through your analysis of each issue. It negates the tendency to ramble and makes it easy to check if you have covered everything. It will also make the problem seem less overwhelming.

I'm a 2L at well known school in NY. I will tell you this...if you are going to school in NY - be prepared for one of the most cut-throat, competitive, and difficult years of your life!:) I managed to finish in the top 15% of my class and here are my tips - but take them with a grain of salt because everybody has their own system.

1. Stay up to date on reading - I know this sounds simple, but when you start having to read 50 pages per class (so if you have 3 classes in one day - which is likely- you are having to read 150 pages in a night), reading can become difficult. Yes you will fall behind, everybody does. But try to outline early (consolidating your notes into a cohesive study aid). I started outlining in the 3rd or 4th week of classes.

2. Do not write down lectures word for word. Really, you should be boiling down your notes into what the heart/core of the matter is. My own experience - at the end of the semester I ended up with about 40-50 pages of notes per class (which is different from 2L year where I have about 80 pages per class).

3. Find a study group early. It is really helpful to review with other people. Now, when I say review - I don't necessarily mean "study." I like to "study" by myself - but review (going over stuff I feel comfortable with) with other people. Half of my study group ended up on law review.

4. Barbri is your friend! Attend barbri lectures, they are fantastic.

5. Do your school's on-campus recruitment program at the end of the year. This is why 1L year is sooo important. The better you do, the more likely you can get a job at a Big-Law (top 100) firm.

6. Don't get too stressed out - take time for yourself now and then. There will be some weekends where you don't do anything and don't beat yourself up for it. You will do well - just do the best you can and don't let the other students psyche you out too much.

Wishing you the best of luck! I would love to have my 1L workload again now that I am being beaten down in my 2L year!

im a 3L now with a semester to go here are my tips: study hard your 1st year- they purposly make it harder than what it is, on exams write everything you can think of but dont go off point, get good at issue spotting within fact patterns by practicing your essays, get outlines from other people - if you have to make friends with the kids your dont like just to get their outlines, dont be afraid to trade your outlines for someone elses - theirs may be better or have stuff yours doesnt, commercial outlines help but are usually not that great, after the 1st year it gets a lot easier - i havent read for a class since 2 weeks into my 3rd semester, good luck. oh and try and get an internship early - cause its all about the job afterward and no one cares how good you did in school unless you work for some huge souless corporation
