I would have to say Sony, Gateway and even Compaq if you want a cheap fast computer. It is really up to your personal preferences.

In my experince, store bought/warehouse computers are designed to breakdown over time so in 3 years, you have to buy a new one. This of course, isn't written in stone but something I think of as a rule of thumb.
The best results come from building your own or having someone who knows how build one for you. You can get a better computer for much cheaper for the price of parts online. Especialy if you already have a computer you can use for basics like a case and a powersource.
But, as Brandnames go, don't buy a Compaq. HP bought out Compaq quite a while ago, but kept the brand around and made their product crap, so HP's look good by comparison. My last storebought computer was a Compaq and I had problems on the first day.
I hear mixed things about Dell and Gateway, but if what you're looking for is a moderate use, family computer that should be fine.
If what you're asking about is computer games, build it custom or get Alienware.
If you're talking about a laptop.. just get something expensive and a good warrenty or something cheap enough to throw away in a year or two.

I had an IBM laptop, Dell desktop and I'm currently using a HP desktop. I would say the HP one performs the best.

They are all very good these days. Parts are much more reliable and the build quality is also good. For Laptops the IBM/Lanovo ThinkPad is and always will be my fav. superior in every aspect. And for desktops, if II'm not allowed to say Apple I will say Alienware
