-4x + 10 = 6x - 40
-----------------------------
+4x to each side:
(-4x +4x) +10 = (6x+4x) - 40
10 = 10x - 40
------------------------------
+40 to each side:
(10 + 40) = 10x (-40 + 40)
50 = 10x
------------------------------
Divide each side by 10:
50/10 = 10x/10
5 = x
------------------------------
So your answer is x = 5

so what you want to do is solve for x so what you do is wirte out the equation so -4x+10=6x-40 aadn then you subtract one of the x's from the side so you could pick 6x so you subtract that and so the 6x is canceled out so then -4x-6x and then the equation is -10x+10=-40 and then you subract 10 from each side so then you are left with -10x=-50 and then you divide -10 from each side and you are finally left with x equaling 5

x^2 - 6x - 40 = (x - 10)(x + 4) you basically had to seem for 2 numbers that expanded by making use of one yet another provide -40 and extra provide -6. Use trial and mistake if needed. If trial and mistake does not artwork, use the quadratic formulation, besides the fact that if be careful with the indicators. i'm hoping this facilitates...

-4x +10=6x - 40
-4x - 6x= -40 - 10(like terms together)
-10x= -50
x= -50 divided by -10
x=5

I'm not understand the "negative" word in front. Maybe it means, -4x?
But..
1. I would subtract 4x from both sides.
Giving you 10 = 2x - 40
2. Then proceed to adding 40 to both sides.
Giving you 50 = 2x
3. You just divide by 2.
Giving you 25 = x.
Hope that helps?

you add the 40 to the another side and then subract the 4x from 6x. then you divide 50 by 2. and you get x equals 25.

10 = 2x - 40 subtract 4x from both sides
50 = 2x add 40 to both sides
25 = x divide each by 2 to get x by itself

You need to get the x's alone, then divide by the coefficient (number in front) of x.
I've noticed you've posted a lot of problems here. What have you tried by yourself?
