This is not China. You do not need anyone's permission to move anywhere in the US. But you should either have a job or savings to tide you over until you can get one. Housing costs have gone thru the roof. Many apartments have been converted to condominiums. When one bedroom condo conversions even in the suburbs are selling for $200,000, rents follow upward.

I am white and I was born and raised in NYC. My husband and I moved down 5 years ago with our three kids. Our apartment was too small, and we found a nice house with a big backyard that we could actually afford. The kids love it down here because they don't have to sit inside the house 4 months out of the year because of the cold. It is a beautiful place to live, and I have grown attached to my perpetual tan. We live in a nice quiet gated community, and have almost no crime in our area.
There are some things you will have to get used to, and some I still find irritating. The fact that the worse drivers in the country all seem to move here, and that there are too many people who work servicing the public, that can't speak English. But I look at it this way..every great city has it's pros and cons.
