To make a round box (like some of the fancy ones that hats or candy come in) requires that the cardboard be molded into the proper shape. The lid would have to be molded separately in the same way. This means that a thousand round pizza boxes would take up a lot more storage room than 1000 of the square type, which come unfolded and can be assembled as needed, with the lid all of a piece with the box. Also, many places do, in fact, make square pizzas!

I guess when you ship truck loads of flat pizza boxes, square ones will make sense because they occupy every square inch of space available. Round ones would just waste more space. And yeah, I guess square ones are easier to manufacture and easier for the pizza ppl to make into boxes (from falttened boxes) than round ones.
