You have to keep both sides of the equation equal. That means that whatever you do to one side of the equation, you must do to the other. You want to get just "x'" on one side of the equation and just a number on the other. Add seven to the first equation: (12x-7) +7 = (5x+49) +7, do the math and you end up with 12x=5x+56. Now subtract 5x from each side: 12x-5x = (5x +49) - 5x and this gives you 7x=56. Divide 56 by seven and you get x=8. Not too bad, eh? Just remember that your object is to end up with "x" on one side and a number on the other. Whatever you do to one side of the equation, you must do to the other. That keeps both sides equal at all times. There's a specific algebra law that this illustrates but I can't remember the name.
