I recently purchased this vehicle and now it won't start, unless I use jumper cables. But then after a remove the jumper cables it shuts off. Is it the alternator? Your feedback is appreciated, thanks

Well no matter what your going to need a battery so start there. Replace the battery and if once you start it the battery light is on then you will need an alternator as well. If you can do the alternator yourself your looking at about 60-80 dollars for the part if you have it done professionally probably around 200 dollars for part and install. Good Luck!!!

Before taking the alternator off, verify your fuses. A blown fuse in the ignition circuit may cause a "no charge" condition. Verify that battery voltage is present at the ignition terminal of the alternator plug.
Otherwise, your the alternator is shot.

Runs around $80 at your closest Advance Auto parts store (re-manufactured)

You need to find the problem before you replace the alt. or the battery. Throwing money and parts at it won't solve anything. You need a hand helg volt meter ( multi meter or vom as they are called) your parts store should have a simple one for about $10. Pick up a repair manual for your car and it should have a section on testing battery circuit. This will cost you far less than a new alt.and you will have them for future problems.
NEVER replace a part till you know the problem

i own a repair shop, and the alternator wont kill one like that ,not that fast anyway,,id check and see if the battery has a dead cell in it,,this will shut one off like that ,but if the battery has any power at all in it, it will stay running until the battery goes down,,i have only seen one case like this that it was the alternator,,and it was taking power out of the battery faster than a charger or a boost could put it in there ,,this was a rare one though,,check the battery, and take the alternator to any advance or auto zone ,and let them check it,,there expensive to buy so make sure that's it before you put one on it,,once it goes on its yours,,good luck,i hope this help,s.,,they cost around 65-100 bucks depending on where you get them at.
