My babe will be 5 months on the 6th and she weighs 16lbs 4oz and my doctor is happy. People think my babe is a lot older and she's almost out of her car seat too!! I wouldn't worry about it if the doctor says it is ok. My babe was VERY round and then she plateau-ed for a month and then grew in length. All of my friends tell me they get round then long, round then long....

Eating habits when they start eating solids will determine if he will be overweight or not. Keep feeding him if he is hungry and only healthy foods when he gets to them. Remember that kids need calories to grow and their metabolism is difference than adults. You don't want to give him a complex either by obsessing with his weight (later on of course) So long as he is healthy and the doctor says he is healthy, show him good eating habits and you will have nothing to worry about 10 years down the road!

Don't listen to what other people say. He is a baby and not all babies are the same. I mean when it comes to children's weight they have certain percentiles. But these percentiles don't say that a baby has to weigh this much when they turn this age. See my daughter who is 8 months old was over 10 lbs when she was born. So it is going to take her a little longer to catch up to another baby that is her age. She weighs 16 lbs and 1.5 oz. And also she was a c-section baby and they say that c-section babies do not gain weight as fast as a normal delivery baby. I would not worry unless your doctor says something about it OK.

My baby was 16 lbs at 4 months. Today he is a handsome, strong, slender guy. My other baby wasn't that heavy until 10 months. He, too, is now a handsome, strong, slender guy. If the doctor says your baby is healthy trust him/her. As another answer said, it depends on the weight / height relationship and other physical factors. All must be taken into account. He could be a big baby and still not be overweight. If you are feeding him healthy food, and not junk, no sweets yet and whatever else your doctor recommends, you likely have nothing to worry about.

I think that by 5 months they want the baby to have doubled his/her birthweight, so if he started out at 8 pounds or so, he's doing fine. Once he starts crawling and moving more, the chubs will come off no problem! Besides, you need to compare his height too. If he's taller than average, he needs the weight.

Short answer - Nothing to worry about.

My son is 3 1/2 months and 15 lbs. He is breastfed and according to the growth percentiles is only in the 50th-75th percentile. You can calculate your baby's percentile at the following websites:

Never worry about a baby's weight. If you underfeed, in an effort to slim him down, you could make him malnourished and cause all kinds of problems. If the doctor says he is fine, he is fine. Baby's who don't at least double their birth weight by the time they are six months are considered unhealthy.

You may just be raising a little boy who will be a big man someday.

If your doctor says he's fine, then I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes people don't know what to say when they see a baby. A lot of people say, "Oh, what a big baby." Or "he's big for his age." These comments are pretty generic. Don't worry about it. Your baby sounds healthy.

If he is within 20 percentiles when you compare his height to his weight he is fine.

Oh and my baby was 20lbs at 4 months, I thought he would be 40 at a year and I would never find a carseat to fit him! At 8 months he was 25lbs.

They are all so different.

Babies aren't overweight.
He's fine. My son was 20 lbs at 4 months....and then by 18 months he was well within the percentile charts.

kids grow at different rates.
He's just a big healthy kid.

Five month old babies cannot be overweight!!!!! If they are tracking on the growth curves appropriately, then do not worry about their weight. This is where eating disorders begin, with overly anxious mothers constantly fretting over their children's weight. Concentrate on healthy nutrition, strong bodies, and growing minds, and the rest will resolve itself.
