Sounds like an idle air control issue. On the older hondas sometimes you can resolve that by resetting the computer. Unplug the battery for about 10 minutes then plug it back up and start the vehicle. Take it for a drive so the computer can go through its relearn procedures and see if that fixed the problem. If not its probably best to take it to a shop and have it looked at. Good Luck!!!

Auto Zone is not likely to scan that car for you. Cars 96 and newer are what we call OBDII, they all have the same diagnostic plug and a standardized system that is easy to check. Codes are obtained in your car by counting flashes of an LED on the computer located under the dash on the passenger side under the carpet.
If the engine simply races, not surges, you most likely have a vacuum leak. If it surges up and down, you have a control problem, could be a variety of reasons, something related to the computer. You need a good mechanic.

Don't put it in neutral. I have a 2004 Durango, the lights blink all of the time. But not until I turn them on. So I drive during the day.

Start withj a diagnostic check at a reputable garage, or the dealer, sounds like the throttle position sensor is going out.
