the same reason people live in the south pole

seriously I'm not sure. Obviously they are able to make a living and support their families.
I don't think anyone lives in the deepest part of deserts - only on the edges.

Do People Live In Deserts

I live in Phoenix, which is in the Sonoran Desert. I live here for the 345 days of sunshine each year, no snow, very little rain, and central location. Yeah, it gets to be really hot in the summer, but there's only about 2 months that it's hard to stay outside - in Wisconsin, where I'm originally from, there were more than 2 months where it was miserable to be outside.

I like the isolation...especially after a day of putting up with people and traffic all day. My nearest neighbor is 1 mile away from my property line which is a 1/2 mile away. I have no conventional power....my water is from a well....and the animals, from coyotes to kangaroo rats love to come around for a visit...I like to see the eagles, vultures and hawks fly around while it's deafing quiet while I eat breakfast....I live in the Mojave desert ....I like the heat of summer and the challange of the freezing windy winters.
It's not for everyone...just like living in the mountains is not for everyone.

Most people live in a certain place because that's where they were born and they belonged to a group that were not prone to moving around for any reason. Sam Kinison used to yell, "move to where the food is!" I guess they don't have the opportunity to leave, so they stay.

Crazy people live in the desert. In Arizona there is an eerie evil feeling in the air. So creepy. Heat increases aggression. Aggression and sex are the two strongest human drives. There are more violent crimes in areas with desert climate. Arizona is scary and dark. The forces of darkness are lurking there. Hiding around every corner! Stay out of the desert. Bad things are in the desert. Crazy people live there!

the desert has very unique landscapes. it has almost no plants, though, but it can be quite beautiful at times. i'm sure that many painters may want to live there, either that or they have a special connection to the desert. they may have had ancestors live there.
