the tank and placing her in a cardboard box, with a basking lamp above it. I leave her there a couple of hours, then I return her to the tank. Is this method fine until I find the right turtle landing? Is there any issue I need to be aware as far as the potential temperature change?

I had this problem with my turtle... he didn't have a place to properly bask and dry out, and my little man got sick.

Turtles definatly need a place to go and bask on their own free will. The basking helps the turtles to digest food and fight infections that could be brewing.

I solved the problem when I went to my local aquatic store (Big Al's Aquarium Sales), and I bought a floating dock. It has 2 arms and suction cups and you stick it to the back of the tank, and there is a large surface that floats. A ramp in the water is for the turtle to climb out onto. It was 30 bucks, (which I thought was kind of pricey at the time), but Zach makes great use of it and it was definatly worth it!!

You can probably make something like this on your own... go to a craft store and pick up some lightweight foamy stuff (make sure it's durable - any lost pieces could be ingested by your little lady and that's not good!!), 2 sticks of some sort and some suction cups.

Good luck!!

It's fine for a short-term solution. Sliders, like any pond turtle, will come up on dry land to bask and lay eggs. This is not a long-term solution, however due to the stress that it can put on the animal due to the constant removal of the turtle from its water environment. Turtles go onto rocks to rest as well. So, it's not just for sunbathing that your turtle appreachiates a good rock. Any rock will do well as long as it does not have sharp edges. Rocks found out in the woods or along the beach will do fine, your turtle isn't picky. Just be sure to soak the item in a 1 part bleach 1 part water combination for a few hours or over night. Then, rinse the item well, let it soak in fresh, clean water, and arrange in your turtle's tank.

No! That is not good for the turtle. RES like other turtles go to bask when ever they want. Some days they won't bask at all. You better lower the temperature a bit and let it go in hibernating. He'll be fine. And once you buy the landing heir up the temperature and he'll wake up.

You are causing the poor thing A LOT of stress. Please stop doing this immediately.

What is the problem with the basking site? This is not usually a big issue. Any waterproof surface that the turtle can climb on to get out of the water will work.

I have seen them made from driftwood, stone, and plastic. They can be suction-cupped to the side of the tank, etc.

If you tell us what the basking site issues are, maybe we can help you solve that so your turtle can be healthier and happier.

No I;ve heard that the turtles should have a little part of dry land in the tank so that they can climb on and bask at free will

My Map turtle is in a 20 gallon long tank that is half full of water. I have rocks piled at one end high enough that he can climb out of the water and have a basking area. He seems to really enjoy it. I think he likes the challenge of the climb out as well. He can get on it from different angles, but I have watched him climb out from the hardest possible place. He pulls himself up and falls back and does that over and over again till he makes it out. The other end of the rock is submersed and all he has to do is slide right up it, but he rather do it the hard way.
Right now he is alone. He had a salamander living with him, but we had a over load of ammonia and I lost him. I am looking for a way to divide the tank better between wet and dry so they have more dry space to climb in. It is hard to find the right things to make a natural habitat for creatures who want both dry and wet space.

one of the best landings you can make for your turtle are made from bricks, just lay them in your tank (or stack them)
