So what would you have done with it after paying to have it towed 192 miles home? You would have had to pay a HEFTY towing charge, and then find some "back alley" mechanic to do it for you, and STILL pay for the transmission. The only thing you might have saved money on would be the labor...and the "back-alley" guy might not have the resources or knowledge to get the job done right.
You can find a "back alley" mechanic in the town where you're going to college to do tune ups and fix minor things, but something this major is probably something you want to have done right. So no, I don't think you're stupid--probably just dealing with a bummer of a situation as well as you can under the circumstances.

Stupid no. Sounds like your following the right path, of ocurse as a college student you should be able to spell better. Just funnin' on you. The price for the rebuild on the tranny sounds about right, considering there could be hard part replacements needed. The only thing that I would have found out was about a warranty, is it local or nationwide. And tell your friend to shut his mouth, becasue the average down payment on a new car, will be in the same range, and yeah maybe more problems ahead for the old car, but no monthly payment, and no insurance increase. I would also ask my "friend", did he plan on paying half of the new car expense, or half of the tranny expense, if not then, "opinion not required".

Learn how to spell. And yes you are stupid. I got my car for under $2,000. for my 1988 Pontiac Fiero and put no money into in. Well I do oil changes and that normal stuff. I get 40+mpg and had no problems with it so far. I've had it for over a year and put close to 70,000 miles on it. Another words you got screwed. Or you bought an import. Get an American car they are cheap to work on and they last forever.

howdy,
If the car has over two hundred thousand miles;use the back yard mechanic. The reason for this;you probably will not get Manny more out of the vehicle.

Im thinking your friend may be right if you have to put work into a vehicle for almost half what you paid for, it may be a sign of more things to come. ggod luck though and I hope that thats all that has to be done to it
