limestone minerals buffer the acid rain. The acid reacts with the calcite, etc. in limestone and changes it to more neutral or even slightly basic. Our groundwater, therefore, tends to have a higher pH even though the pH of rainwater is low.

Any sculpture or outdoor use of limestone or marble will be degraded by acid rain, since the acid ion (H+) reacts with the carbonate ion in these minerals (CO3=) to produce water and carbon dioxide.
