In Spanish you can use the word "peste" as a synonym for "plague", yes; and also when someone bothers you a lot, you can say he/is is "como la peste". But it has also another meaning; we say "qué peste" when something smells really bad; in English you would say that something stinks.

In Italian, the word peste means plague. This could refer to the bubonic plague or "Black Death". Unless you are getting confused with pesto, which is a green sauce made from basil.
