x=-8 (negative 8) well neg=negative for this ok?
heres how i got it:
(neg)8x-1=(neg)5x+23
neg8x+neg5x-1=neg5x+5x+23
neg3x-1=23
neg3x-1+1=23+1
neg3x=24
neg3x divided by neg 3x=24divided by neg3x
x=neg8

-8x-1=-5x+23. Set up the problem, next add positive 5x to the left hand side. The negative 5x and the positive 5x cancels out. Then you add positive 1 to positive 23 which equals 24. The negative 1 and positive 1 cancels out. Which leaves you with -3x/3 = 24/3. So x=-8

u add 5x to both sides to cancel it so u have 13x-1=23 subtract 1 13x=22 x= 1. something
