William Sleator is a good fantasy/sci fi author for teens. If you get sick of R.L.Stein. House of Stairs-about orphans trapped in a house made entirely of stairs who only get food if they act violently oward each other, Interstellar Pig- about aliens who come to earth and play a card game with kid to decide which species will have the right to survive, and Among the Dolls- about a girl who gets trapped in a dollhouse and has to outwit the evil dolls living in it. They aren't strictly monster books, but they are very supernatural and engrossing.

Margaret Mahy's book "The Changeover" is about a girl choosing to become a witch in order to save her little brother from succumbing to a sort of vampirism. I would recommend that book above all others if monsters are what you're after.

Susan Cooper is another good author. Seaward is about a normal girl who discovers that she is a selkie (a seal-woman) and joins up with a boy on magical journey. There aren't any run of the mill frankenstein's, but there is a man who turns to stone when the sun sets, and a strange and ancient creature made up of colorful little sticks among other very original creatures. It is a story of journey, which responds to the young adults need for adventure.
