To expand on the previous answer: the first major league game was April 22, 1876 between the Boston Red Caps and the Philadelphia Athletics. No home run was hit in that game.

The first home run was hit by Ross Barnes of the Chicago White Stockings on May 2, 1876 against the Cincinnati Red Stockings. (Charley Jones of the Red Stockings hit a homer later in the game for the 2nd home run in history.)

tough question to answer as the fact about when the first "major" league game was held is often disputed......most likey though, it was not what we think of as a home run today. outfield fences were only partial at best and often didn't exist at all in the 1800's....often there were no boundaries at all on the fair territory that made up the outfield. ....sometimes fans were stopped from encroaching by the use of ropes and sometimes they were not and would wind up sitting within 300 feet of home plate... long fly balls were not a big part of the early game....the high towering fly over the fence for a home run is for the most part a product of the very late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
