The biggest markets were overseas in Europe, true, but the biggest reason to ship as much as possible (other than the obvious, sell more, get more money) was that the tidewater planters of Maryland and Virginia were usually heavily in debt to English merchants. They lived lavishly, and in a society with very little cash, they had to keep their creditors happy. Tobacco was what they had to barter with for the manufactured goods America did not yet produce.

Well honey, ever thought of three packs a day by the price? There was no gold in Maryland or Virginia. But Tobacco was there. Addict enough people in Europe to this strange and pleasurable drug, and you have a form of gold on the market place. It's still legal today and the same principal still works. If you smoke, good explanation of why to quit, over and beyond health reasons.
