I am 34 weeks along my pregnancy. At my last two appointments with the doctor, my blood pressure was kind of elevated (136/84). I will be seen every week from now on. I have no swelling or protein in my urine (thank God), but are there ways of controling my blood pressure by doing certain things? I would like to hear from your experiences and what you did to prevent being induced (if that was the case)? Thank you for your help.

Serious answers only please!

I was 34 wks when i was diagnosed with PIH. I had really bad swelling, problems with my vision, and severe headaches. i was put on bed rest and that helped me out alot. i would monitor my blood pressure at home, and if i walked around (like to get food, etc.) it would go up again, so for me the bed rest was the best for me. i gave birth at 39 wk (i was also induced) because i had ALOT of protein in my urine. i ended up having a csection because of fetal distress, but in the end everything turned out great. his apgars were 8 &9's, and the recovery wasn't bad at all. i now have a healthy boy and i'm doing great. my advice is follow your doctor's orders, if they say bed rest, do it as much as possible. you are pretty far along, so try not to worry too much (not good for you or baby). good luck!

At thirty four weeks, you are well into the safe zone, if they should have to take the child. I had PIH, (diastolics around 100) that developed into HELLP syndrome, and they sectioned her out, she weighed 730 grams! That is about one and a half pounds. I was so desperately ill, I did not even get the chance to see her for the first four days. The goal of monitoring your BP is to assess the health of the child, and since he/she is safe now, they will do what is best for both of you. I had the not so delightful experience of having mag sulfate IV, which is testament to torture, in my opinion.

She is eight years old now, and wiry, athletic, smart, and kind, with a great sense of humor.

Best wishes on your little one. I have the feeling all will be fine, and this will soon be part of your distant memories and concerns.

I would suggest taking it very easy. Act like you are on bed rest as much as possible. Also try to cut salt out of your diet. I tried everything and in fact I had to be on VERY strict bed rest. Couldn't take care of my other children. I was unable to prevent being induced (blood pressure went to 158/123 and +4 in my urine). Although with doing everything I did I was able to not be induced until 38 weeks with my last. With the one before I had him at 36 weeks but everything was great!!! Good luck. And congrats on the baby.

I eat alot of cucumbers and would go get my bp taken and the nurses were astounded at how low it was when i was pregnant. It wasn't until then that I found out cucumbers can lower BP!

stop eating a lot of salt, also, keep away from stress and/ or set an hour for total relazation time... read a book, sleep... etc. go for a walk.
congrats on the baby
