Your RES doesn't need a friend. They can live happily on there own. If he seams bored, then u can get some some gravel and aquatic plants in his tank. They like to dig and hide in th plants. But if you want to buy a new friend for him, then you need to make sure that you can afford it. 2 turtles need twice as much space. But if u can afford it then it will be great.

1. Turtles are not social animals. They do not really need cagemates and should not have any unless the habitat is big enough for all of them.
2. A 30 gallon tank 1/2 filled is about 15 gallons of water. The rule of thumb is 10 gallons per inch of turtle, so your tank is only adequate for a 1.5" turtle. More space to swim in often helps a lot.
3. If your 'underwater filter' is an undergravel filter, a.) it won't work as well without gravel on top of it, and b.) they don't work well for turtles anyway. Cannister filters are usually the best, and aim for 2-3 times more filtration power than you'd use for fish.
4. If your turtle is exploring things with its mouth, you might try a more varied diet. Try some shrimp, small fish, etc.

Good luck!

first of all turtles are no longer social creatures by using nature. do no longer purchase yet another turtle only because of the fact you think of this could make the different turtle extra satisfied and supply it a pal. many times, in case you place 2 turtles at the same time they'll combat, be agressive and one will dominate the different. This leads to malnutrition and now and returned even loss of existence of one of your turtles. additionally, undergo in suggestions the size of those turtles. They arise to twelve" in diameter each. I do talk from journey as I honestly have 2 adults (a male and a woman). there is relatively no longer the thank you to treatment what you spot as bordum. provide them some guppies or small fish reckoning on the size of your turtle, according to probability some goldfish. those many times are healthy for them and a sturdy distraction.
