At home depot they sell plastic squares that go right under your washer and dryer. Thye wont be elevated but they will be protected from the wet. They are cheap and you wont have to worry about your washer rocking off of them. Sorry I cant remember the name of them but ask a worker at home depot and they will know what Im talking about.

I would scrape any flaking paint and sweep it up. But, I suggest you go with the second answer, get a carpet, you can usually find remnant carpet pieces fairly inexpensively. Perhaps even less cost than a sander and repainting, etc. Plus, it will act as a sound filter, reduce any echo you may have now. A cement floor is cold too, carpet warms the room up aesthetically as well as otherwise! =o) EDIT: I think bolt is smoking some heavy $h!t, be careful he could blow up the basement with all those paint fumes.. and Stop sniffin that $h!t!!

Fork lift pallets. I see them for free sometimes but I think you can buy them too. The trays someone else mentioned are a good idea too. The lip is about 2 or 3 inches, that's how far the water would have to rise to get over the lip.

For something cheap and easy. Find a couple of wood pallets, like they ship things on. They everywhere. To make it look and work better you can buy a 4'x8' sheet of wafer board (not particle board) at the Lumber store (it the cheapest). Cut in half and nail on top of the pallets.

Built a concrete or timber platform. Whatever you put under, make sure it is stable. The last thing you want happening is for the washer/dryer toppling over.

If you have a top load machine with matching dryer, get rid of them, and get yourself a front load laundry pair. If you have a front load set already, get the pedestals for them. Those pedestals are real sweeeeet.
