The basic test is a Pap smear, which will check for abnormal cells on the cervix. Basically, the doctor will use a speculum to hold open the vaginal canal then swab a brush across the cervix to take a few sample cells. While it's usually relatively pain free, it can be uncomfortable for some women.

It's also important to note that a Pap smear checks for abnormal cells; however, not all abnormal cervical cells are due to cervical cancer. Having regular Pap smears is what allows doctors to detect and treat cell changes before they have the chance to develop into something harmful.

give you a pelvic exam. your usual pap smear with the swab, and also:

they put gloves on, stick 2 fingers up your vagina towards your belly button, then put the other hand on top of your tummy, and feel around your cervix from both sides, inside and out. its a little weird having the doc's fingers up there, but, it must be done. go to a woman doc! less weird.

a pap smear. basically it's a little brush they use to remove cells from your cervix and they look for any irregularites in cell size, shape, etc. to determine if you have cancer, or just an abnormality.
