it was the last name of a philanthropist, washington duke, who was extremely rich and started a school to name after himself (because that's what philanthropists do) in the mid-1800s. his daughter daisy (i think it was daisy) duke inherited all his money after his divorce and (eventually) death. she moved to newport, ri and restored many old buildings to their original grandeur.
