instead of christmas, i want to celebrate the birth of messiah but not consumerism and consumption. what does anyone suggest? Hannakah seems neat, and I would like my kids to know about it.

Hanukkah has nothing to do with christ at all but it's a pretty cool holiday. Kids should learn about what each holiday means so kudos to you for educating them.

If you want to celebrate the birth of the Messiah...then you would not be celebrating a jewish holiday...They do not believe Christ was the Messiah. There is nothing that stops you from celebrating Christmas (the birth of Christ) without buying into all the commercialism.

If you really want to celebrate Christ's birth you should attend a Church service and volunteer at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Maybe have your kids bring gifts for children that might not be getting any. That would help your children learn the real reason for the season.

Hanukkah does not have to do with the birth of messiah..
If you don't know it's importance, I don't see a reason you should celebrate it, or teach your kids about it for that matter. If your interested though, I suggest you find a friend who is Jewish and go over to their house during hanukkah.
