In 1940, 13 November 1940, I was born in Bandung, Indonesia. That was also the year when Bruce Lee, (Li Xiao Long was born) So he was my younger brother by only a few days.( His name in Chinese means, The Small Dragon, while my name is Li Wei Long, meaning The Great/Grand Dragon).
In 1946 I was just 6 years old and started school at the Bandung Christian School when civil war broke out, known also as the Dutch Police Action, or the Indonesian Revolution. Bandung was turned into a lake of fire, and we had to evacuate to the northern part of Bandung which was still jungle at that time, and survived from eating wild fruits and vegetables and cassava.

Since my father was a high ranking officer in the Dutch Metal Factory of Indonesia (NIMEF-Nederland Indische Metal Fabrik) my family was rescued from Bandung in West Java and transferred to Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi (Celebes), where I grew up until I finished SMP or Junior High School. In 1949 there was another uprising in Makassar by Westerling, where 40,000 people were killed. After that South Sulawesi which was formerly included in the East Indonesian Country (Negara Indonesia Timur), was disbanded and became part of the Indonesian Republic. The Ducth language, which was formerly the official language and medium of instruction in the Holland Chinese School or Dutch Chinese School, was replaced by the Indonesian Language.

1950 I was just 10 years old and studying at the newly formed Sekolah Rakyat Indonesia, Indonesian People's School. Life was very good. I remember we were only given 10 cents for our pocket money every day. But that was more than enough for our lunch. 2.5 cents will buy a lunch of yellow rice, which is rice cooked in coconut oil and safron, complete with its savouries, consisting of fried potato chips, peanuts, pieces of meat and vegetables and chilli sauce. The rest of the pocket money was good for a cup or cone of iceream and candy, and fairy floss or soda pop drink.

On the eve of New Year 1940 we were having a party at my friend's home and I won Ten rupiahs. I felt like a real millionaire. What happened between 1940-1950, in one sentencen I could say: Those were the golden days in Indonesia as well as anywhere else in the world I think, which will never return.

One of the biggest accomplishments was the invention and marketability of television. I believe TV came out in 1947; I remember watching wrestling and young women taking baths in advertisement in 1948.
