asking a guy out doesn't make anyone look stupid. i personally would like a girl to ask me out and i would definitely say yes.. that's only if i like her.
i suggest a note:) or pull him aside would work well too!
slipping a note would make him confused and excited. when you ask him out, he's going to look at you and you look back with a small smile and look into his eyes and look down.
he's going to say, "aw". haha don't ask me how i know, it happened to me two years ago in freshmen year in high school.

First,make sure he will say yes
Give hints,messages and etc.
It will be obvious if he want to go out with you
(Who knows,in the end,he might ask you instead!)
Second,ask him.
The first step is super hard but it will avoid all the embarrassment and looking stupid(that your major concern)
Verbally is the best because it can avoid all misunderstanding.

you won't look stupid unless he thinks that only guys can ask girls out...
but otherwise pull him aside...notes might get intercepted, or he might misunderstand or something and definetely not in public..i mean just in case he says no (hope not) that's embarassing..
