Everybody is wrong!!!

New Spain is the colonial name for Mexico and Southern USA when they one big chunk of the Spanish Empire from the 16th to the 19th century.

As such, the most important crop was CORN, which was first "domesticated" by natives in that area and was the base for food. Myths about men coming from corn and its sacred intent are part of the mesoamerican culture. In colonial times, as in ancient times, as today, corn is the most important part of the meal.

Neither tobacco nor sugar were developed in Mexico because of the Spanish monopolies in the Antilles which restricted what could be raised in New Spain.
