outdoor ones are grounded. do not use indoor bulbs outside, unless you know it is not going to rain or be just a little wet out.

Outdoor lights are protected from the elements, while indoor lights are not. If it rains etc. the indoor lights are dangerous. You can use outdoor lights inside but DO NOT use indoor lights outside. You can't tell for sure the difference between indoor and outdoor, except the fixtures may have gaskets around them (rubber things like a washer around the light bulb) or they look more heavy-duty ( the cables). But, if you're not sure , use them for inside only.

Outdoor ones are water-resistant.

You can use indoor ones outdoor, but dont' be surprised if they short out during the first rain, snow, or dew-fall.
