This theme, often played up in movies creates a stereotype. Are there sensitve, emotionally stiffled Indian women suffering in a silent web of patriarchy and tradition or has liberation reached the villages as well? Whenever I meet Indian women in the US and Europe, they all seem so full of life and energy in addition to being beautiful.

It's true but not only in Indian villages or remote places,it's everywhere..everywhere where there is enough people especially these people who are religios leaders, community leaders who only thinks about women as well..nothing.
In Africa, women get mutilated as it the culture if not they wont get married and considered 'bad' women. In India their families are force to pay the groom family so that they can get married..and they dont have a word to say..these movies you are talking about just like any other movies they tend to use human sufferings to get people to watch, who likes movies with happiness from geginning to end?? very few. The wetern world tend to give freedom to all that.
