I think your computer is infected with adware/spyware, which is causing the problem and not the web browser you are using. You could very well change from IE to Firefox but I believe the popups will continue. To rectify the situation, you should download and install a antispyware program(s) to remove the adware/spyware. The 2 most popular free tools are Spybot Search & Destroy and Lavasoft's Ad Aware, both of which can be found at: http://www.filehippo.com/software/antispyware/

You will need instructions on how to use them. Therefore, read the following articles:
1. "How to effectively remove Malware using Spybot Search & Destroy" (http://www.malwarehelp.org/how-to-effectively-remove-malware-spybot1.html)

2. "How to effectively remove Malware using Ad-Aware SE Personal" (http://www.malwarehelp.org/how-to-effectively-remove-adaware1.html)

You can remove IE but that would cause a BIG problem. Windows and Microsoft Updates require IE. There is a way to use Firefox to update Windows but it is complicated. My advice is to switch from IE 6 to the new IE 7, which has many new security features. If you are steadfast in wanting to remove IE then go to: Start menu > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs... > Add/Remove Windows Component > check "Internet Explorer" > [Next] > [O.K.] > Reboot.

I don't think Bill will let you delete IE! But you should keep it on your hard drive. Firefox runs just fine with IE still installed. You just have to tell your computer you want Firefox to be your default browser.

Some web sites are only accessible with IE. Especially Microsoft sites. If you ever need to look for help in Microsoft DB's or need to update your operating system, you will need IE. And judging from past performance, you will need to update many times for security flaws!

go in the start menu and click control panel. Then, click on add/remove programs, then on add/remove windows components. You should see a list of windows components with checkboxes, and you just have to uncheck internet explorer and click next.

PS Good job choosing Firefox, it's awesome

PPS minotaur and psycho are definitely both wrong. IE is part of the OS, but you can choose which parts of the OS you want on your computer (to some extent). IE is completely optional.

Minotaur's right.

You can't delete IE. You'll need to clean the PC first. Go on-line and search for Ad-Aware, Spybot, Ewido.net, MS Defender... clean out the PC.

Then, you can use Firefox if you wish but you can't remove IE. It's built into the operating system.

You cannot delete IE - Microsoft integrated it into the operating system. But that doesn't mean you have to use it! :D It does sound like you might have some spyware on the machine tho ... check out http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ for a great free spyware utility. Whether or not you use IE, you will still need to protect against spyware. Ahhh .. I love my Mac :)

You have got spyware on your machine that is your main problem - you need to get a spyware cleaner on there first before you do anything else.
