The picture you are thinking of was taken during a 1989 protest in Tiennamen Square. The tank actually stopped and the man was, as has been stated, taken away. However, in 1993 there was another protest in Tiennamen Square, but this time the Chinese officials were prepared for both the protesters and the media. Protesters were killed (some under tanks) and very few photographic records of the incident exist.

There was so much publicity that the Chinese were ashamed. They kept it 'hush-hush'. Nobody knew exactly what happened to him.
But you know what, he is the most talked about symbol of Chinese Tiananmen massacre and he entered the history books indelibly never to be forgotton by anybody - all in a matter of 10 minutes.
His protest and his feelings came from his heart. He was sincere. He cared for his country so deeply. It is that symbol which touched everyone's heart world over.

to my understanding he was arrected along with many others that day although some were shot they are most likely still in a prison camp somewhere doing slave labor and being "educated"
