An Air Pump serves two functions. Whilst reticulation/circulating the water it both aerates and filters the the fluid as it passes through the installed system. The pump/filter system, by definition helps the clean the water, but not necessarily the glass. Most units are installed merely by putting then into the tank, plugging them in and hitting the switch. I would not bother putting one into a small tank, just remove a quantity of water every few days (and replace it with fresh water that has been allowed to stand over night).

An air pump is used to reoxygenate a fish tank. Because just like people who are trapped in a sealed room the fish will begin to deplete the oxygen in the water they live in. Since fish use thier gills to filter the oxygen out of the water they cannot breath the air like we can, so we must install a pump to keep air in the water. A pump can help keep the tank clean also as over time algea will begin to grow in water that is not circulated enough, the algea however is beneficial as it will help to reoxygenate the water, assuming the fish have not already died...

Air pumps just push into the tank. It can help by putting more oxygen in the tank, which is good, but it doesn't help keep it clean.
If you have a betta in your 1gallon, I don't suggest you get an air pump. They create a lot of water flow, and bettas don't like that.
If you want to instal one, you need the pump, air tubing, and an airstone (which is like a small blue holey rock) you attach the air tubing into the pump, and you put the airstone at the other tend of the tube, and put the stone in the tank, at the bottom. Then plug the pump in.

THey dont help keep it clean but they do have an important job. Fish are animals and tehy need oxygen, and air pump puts oxygen into the water which is key for healthy(and living) fish. Now some fish like GOuramis and Bettas are labryth fish that have a lung-like organ so they can breath air from eth surface!

An air pump is to oxygenize the water, because some fish can't do it on their own. (fish that can include gold fish, and betta fish) I don't really know how to install them on a gallon tank, but the directions would be on the box/packaging.

They help keep oxygen in the water. which your fish need to breathe. Some do not really keep your tank clean..it can help because it 'cleans' the water and clean water helps keep a clean tank.
You buy them at PetCo or PetSmart, Walmart...wherever.... follow the directions on the container...you put one part on the bottom of the tank and cover it with rocks...I dont know each detail...

not really. It is mainly to keep a fresh supply of oxygen in the tank. the continuous supply of bubbles helps fish to breathe better. There are usually instructions when you buy the pump.
