I am thinking of gauging my ears.Right now I have normal ear peircings, but I do not know what gauge they are. I think I want to stretch up to a 8 gauge. How can I gauge them? How badly will it hurt, and can I do it at home?

If you have "normal" ear piercings, they're most likely 18 gauge (possibly 16).
Start by trying to put 14 gauge jewelry in...if it won't go, hang on to it and try 16.
If you can get the 16 in without any effort, then you can use a taper to help get the 14 in, but it will feel a little tender for a day or two. You can either buy a taper, or have a local piercer taper it for you...if you buy the jewelry from them, they'll likely taper it for you for free.
It's best to wait at least a month between sizes to allow the new sized hole to adjust and if there's any tearing, it allows that to heal. If any size up tears enough that it bleeds, you want to give it two months. Don't go more than one size at a time or you *will* tear, and you'll wind up spending any time you think you saved by skipping a size letting it heal.

I found that the stretch from 10 to 8 was among the more painful ones. However, in about 3 days the tenderness is gone. Just because it stops being sore does not mean it's ready to stretch again, so don't get ahead of your body's ability to heal...no pain does not mean healed.

I think regular piercings are around 16 gauge. You can get earrings with a thicker post (the part of the earring that goes through your ear) and gradually make the hole big enough to wear a 14 or a 10 gauge, which is about the size of a bellybutton ring. I would get them professionally done though if I were you.

i did them myself, you just keep going down. right now you're around a 16. so go to a tattoo shop, newbury comics (or usually somewhere they sell cds) and by a 14. just keep going down! it doesnt hurt until you start going to the 6's or so. but up to the 8 it doesnt hurt that bad. and yes you can do it at home. goodluck!

and it doesn't bleed at all. at least mine didnt..
and i took them out, they completely closed, and i only went up to a 6. so they'll close after a few months if you dont want them anymore!
