Yes, it happens to me all the time at work. My employees start chattering, and my mind inadvertently starts wandering because I have a milliion things to get done.
By the way, I've heard recently that the human brain processes information much more quickly than we can say it, so therefore you're continually thinking ahead even while trying to listen to someone else talk. Being a good listener means making an effort to focus on what the other person is saying; something I need to do too!

At work I have to ignore a lot of what people are telling me cuz if I don't, I would never get their problem solved. And there's nothing worse than someone rattling (and ranting) about something when you're trying to figure out their records and give them an answer and SHUT THEM UP!

Yeah especially if I'm on Yahoo answers or watching TV. It's bad but I tend to tune people out.

all the time, I tune everyone out! I hate it when I'm asked something, and I have no idea what they're talking about. I always answer with a "I don't know".

I do and it's embarassing especially when my students are telling me why they're late, they haven't done their homework, they have attention deficit syndrome, the poor dears,....lol.
