Vacate means to dismiss the case and reinstate means to place the parties in the original situation prior to a case.

In the case of a landlord/tenant relationship, vacate means leave the property and take all you belongings with you. In a lawsuit it could also mean canceling a previous order of the court. Reinstate means to reverse an order to dismiss something.

Voided, eliminated, stricken from the record. If a sentence was vacated, then the conviction still stands, but the appellate court found some problem with the sentence, either what it was or how it was determined. So, the matter is remanded for determination of a new sentence based on the conviction. If a conviction was vacated, it's usually because the trial was found so severely defective that the verdict could not stand. But not so bad that the person cannot be retried (new trial).
