not when you download from a file-sharing software!
file-sharing is when a bunch of people gather together and they contribute music, photos, documents, to a big folder, and users can browse through it and download whatever they like from someone else.
yes, it may be risky, but its much safer than downloading free mp3 music from some illegal internet site.
some suggestions could be...
Kazaa (100% safe and spy-ware free.. the best of em all)
Limewire (known to have a FEW bugs and viruses but overall okay)
Bearshare (a few viruses roaming around)

hope this helps!
btw- each site for those file-sharing softwares (you can download them for free at http://www.softpedia.com or at their official site; search it on google) has explanations on why file-sharing is not illegal, if you wanna double-check. and search for the 100% Spyware Free badge!

The only "legal" way id to download from the iTunes Store. Only 99 cent per song. Click in the store icon on the top L-H side of the iTunes screen.

You can also "rip" any CD to iTunes.

you can pay through ipod store, or you can do file sharing. And yes in most cases file sharing is illegal. But some web sites are pretty easy to go undetected.

iTunes. If this isn't what you mean, rephrase your question to get music FOR, not to, your iPod. You could always buy stuff from the iTunes music store.
