Bill Clinton will probably be judged by most historians as an average president. His greatest domestic achievements--balancing the federal budget and reforming the federal welfare system to include work requirements--were both essentially defensive maneuvers. In foreign affairs, his record was decidedly mixed, with successful resolutions of the crises in Bosnia and Kosovo but major blunders in Somalia and Rwanda that cost literally hundreds of thousands of lives. Clinton also failed to act strongly against the growing threat of Islamist terrorism as embodied in Al Qaeda and of course his dalliances with Monica Lewinsky destroyed his entire second term's domestic agenda. Clinton's greatest accomplishment was no doubt doing everything he could to maximize the United States' economic growth during the extraordinary economic boom of the 1990's such as lowering the budget deficit and trying to make the economy serve the interests of the middle class in a time of rapid economic transition from an industrial to a service-based American economy that was having to come to grips with globalization. Clinton was a man gifted with extraordinary political skills and one of the finest minds since Thomas Jefferson held the office--but his own personal weaknesses ultimately meant that his was a presidency of which historians will always ask the question, "what could have been?"

Bill Clinton's first official bill was The Family Leave Act, which the Republicans blocked for years. I know 4 people who have used this benefit to care for a family member, and I personally had the privilege to care for my Mom and Dad while they were terminally ill. You can't put a number on that! Bill Clinton balanced the budget and built a surplus which, if it had been applied properly, would have made social security solvent for 50 years. Bill Clinton protected our federal lands against greedy land developers and timber companies, as Teddy Roosevelt had done before him. Bill Clinton supported higher education with new college programs. He confronted the race problem in this country and urged people to right the wrongs that have driven Americans apart through our entire history. He helped to negotiate peace in Ireland, which is now one of the fastest growing economies in the world. He kept the North Koreans from developing nuclear weapons by negotiating and giving them hope that the world would help their people. He stopped the slaughter in Kosovo and sent a General there who did not lose a single American soldier! He stopped the Republicans from decimating our constitutional rights. He established workfare, which he had already done in Arkansas. Anyone who thinks a sex scandal is more important than any one of these, I feel sorry for you.

Sorry, He doesn't even rate in the top ten. .Domestic policies were mediocre, and the so-called budget surplus was pretty much on paper. The stock market dive in the last years of his presidency reflects this. He proposed a complete revamping of the health care system, and it was a complete failure. His foreign policy didn't keep us out of the war in Bosinia. Not retaliating for the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 by Islamic terrorists, and the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole by al Qaeda, only put off the growing danger which culminated in the 2nd attack, by al Qaeda, on the World Trade Center in 2001. These are just a few reasons why he doesn't qualify for being the greatest president ever.

bill Clinton ran the government like it should be run, by the people for the people and all the people, this idiot we got now runs it for the rich only. the man acted in the best int erst of all the people. he had a budget surplus when he went out of office and every president should at least have a balanced budget. there were plenty of jobs for everyone while he was in office and they were good paying jobs too. as for his mis deeds with Monica she was sent to the white house by the republicans to set him up. why else did Linda tr it have a recorder and recored her conversations with Monica?? i know the man should not have messed with her but its was a personal thing as far as I'm concerned. this country would be way ahead if his wife could be elected and have him to advise her .

Not "the greatest" but one of the greatest.
We all lived in times of domestic tranquility and prosperity on the financial levels. (More so than these days, unless you're rich)
And we did not have an f'ed up foreign policy.

Oh, HELL NO!! He slashed the military and intel agency budgets, he was totally ineffective at dealing with terrorism and cared more about dipping his stick than about protecting the country. Come on - he discussed policy on the phone while getting a rim job!

He was not the greatest in leadership, brains or vision. But he was one of the greatest in having popular appeal. We were willing to forgive this "bad boy president" anything. And his lingering popularity may even help get his wife elected to take his place in the Oval Office.

I absolutely LOVED Bill Clinton
He had an affair, he gave technology to North Korea to have them get better medical technology, but instead, they make nukes. Why is everyone so mad at Bush? BILL CLINTON gave them the technology to build nukes...what an idiot!
And he is weak on giving decisions on foreign affairs. I ltotally loved Bill Clinton...can't you tell? *cough, cough*
