There will definately be an incresae in the system's performance, but it is not proportional i.e. it will not double up the systems's perfromance The increasse would be maginal but definately noticeable. The logic is simple, more of your data will get stored into the RAM and lesser onto the swap file which resides on the hard dsk. A hard disk is a very slow periphaeral and every I/O (Input output) operation that involves the hard disk takes more time than retrieving data from the RAM which is directly connected with a faster bus to the CPU. An additional 256 MB of data available in the RAM and not swapping from your swap file is a boost to the system's performance.

Will adding more RAM make my Internet browsing faster?
Not directly, no. Internet browsing speed depends on a number of factors, but most important is your connection speed. That said, you might notice some improvement from additional RAM if you are viewing or working with large files (such as photos and digital audio and video), or if you switch between your browser and other applications often.

Will more memory help my games run faster?
Probably. Upgrading your memory is typically the easiest and least expensive way to upgrade your computer for a significant boost in performance.

A memory upgrade is especially helpful if you're using memory-intensive applications such as games or graphics and video editing software, work with large files or have more than one program open at one time.

Keep in mind, though, that your computer's performance depends on many different things. Memory is important, but it's just one factor.

Maybe.

It depends on your system and the program(s) you're running.

If your OS is XP, then YES, it will run faster (since XP wants 512, but can run on the 256). If you want to speed it up even more, you may want to add even more. However, the "speed boost" given from more memory, while noticeable, is not too dramatic.

Also, if you are running a Compaq with the included "Power Saver" (?) program running, you can see a dramatic speed boost by turning that off...your CPU clock speed will double, since it keeps temperature down by running the CPU at half speed. For "safety," you'll want to purchase a "cooling" tray.

If you are on dial-up internet it makes no difference at all. if you have 128 ram or 512ram but your applications and software will run faster if you update to 512ram. ram is cheaper then it was a few years ago. so i would go for it!

You might. You need to provide the specs of your computer and what program you need to run faster.
