I promise that Arthur and I did not get together before he answered. I don't know him, yet it's interesting that he is from my home.
Many benefits are inherent in being a spouse, yet love must come first. I learned a good saying when I was involved with Cross & Crown Ministries. "Christ is life. The rest is detail." Everything should turn out right in a relationship between spouses when God is at the center.

Before the dawn of relgions sweets humans had civil ceremonies. They were brought together by the elders of the tribes and paired off. As humanity grew father's began offering their daughters in marriage along with dowerys because in ancient times males were more wanted than females in a family and marriage was a way a father could rid his family of unwanted daughters in order to give more of the wealth of the family to the sons and future son in laws. Religion in marriages is actually a farily new concept...not more than a couple thousand years old. The reasons for "government" intervention has to do with the reality of life. Marriage is basically a contract...legal and binding, just like in business. That is why it takes a court divorce to disolve a marriage. Blood tests are done not because the government wants to keep tabs on the couple but for both partners to be assured that the one they are married isn't bringing something "else" in the way of infection into the marriage, how would YOU like it if after a few months of marriage found out that your "blushing bride" had giving you syphallis? It is also a way to alert the couple to precautions when planning a family. If both partners in the marriage are of different blood types (negative and positive) it could lead to complications during a birth, if the mother has negative blood (especially O negative) and the father is a positive the pregnancy could end up being positive. During labor when the baby gets to the birth canal the antibodies in the mother's blood will "attack" the baby's blood as if the baby was an infection because postive blood doesn't belong with negative blood and could result in the baby needing a transfusion immediately after birth or could result in the death of the baby altogether. Sadly religious ceremonies don't consider this...as far as "God" is concerend...not everyone on the planet beleives in "God" therefore your's is pretty much a moot point for those who don't...

Everything you said about commitment is true. The government doesn't give you permission to get married think of it more as a fee to pay to handle all the paper work needed to join your names
in a legal union and to reap the benefits of a recognized union by, for example, insurance companies...........
Therefore when you want to end your legal union because one or more of the parties decided to stop "taking the other as their lawfully wedded" you get to pay another fee to end it.
If "death do us part" occurs then the legally wedded is entitled to the remains..................of the estate and not taxed an inheritance tax because it was already legally half theirs in the first place...........
Two thoughts: The fee is not that great when you stop and consider other expenses in life. Maybe if it was substantially larger more couples would stop to consider the gravity of the decision they are making. If this did occur perhaps there would be less divorce, broken homes, etc, etc,etc..............
Commitment isn't a cost $$$$ it's a choice!!!!!
PS: When I entered into my "committed covenent before God and man "I "donated" more to the church, officiant, choir, organist, soloist, florist, bridal shop, limo driver, caterer, DJ,Photographer, printing company,............there was so many people who had their hands in my pocket that day I was actually glad to see "it only cost $75 for a marriage liscense!!!!"

Because the government wants it both ways. You pay them to make the commitment "legal" and then you pay thru the nose to get out of the "legality" when your spouse decided to not be committed to it anymore.
And tax purposes? OMG do they legally stick it to you if you do a married filing separate. The way I see it, since he is legally able to hoard all his income for himself and his ownership of pre-marital property then I should be able to legally file separate without the extra TAX PENALTY.

Why involve the Government? Because there are financial benefits to being married, and if you take advantage of those benefits, your marriage needs to be recorded.

A good question.
Much of the reason is due to venereal disease.
They don't want you to get married without a blood test to see if either of you has syphilis.
No I am not kidding.
