I hope I'm not simplifying too much as to lose the meaning. Think of things like Kleenex tissues or band-aid bandages. In these instances, the brand name of one product has filtered down to be the common use term for all of those products. When you have a cold, do you say, "I need a tissue!" or "Where's the Kleenex?" Similarly, don't we all scramble for a band-aid when we get a cut, regardless of the brand name of the bandages in our medicine cabinet? Hope that helps! :D
