If the egg is not fertilized within 24 hours, it will begin to break down.
Sperm can live 3 to 5 days in the vaginal vault. A woman is most 'fertile' 1 to 2 days prior to actual ovulation. This is because the sperm need a 'head-start' in order to start the journey to the fallopian tube, which is where fertilization takes place (not implantation obviously), as well as due to the relatively shorter life span of the egg. The sperm needs to essentially be there waiting for the egg ideally.
