first, pick up all the mess. put everything in its place. you have to see progress after every half an hour or so - so that laziness won't overcome you. after that, you start dusting, then sweeping the floors. do not take your focus off the job at hand, let's say you found a movie cd stack under your clothes, put it in the cd rack and don't watch it until your done cleaning.

One day I made up a schedule where when I get home from work or school I clean one room a day. One of the days is laundry and hallways. I have a small place so it works well. Try it, it doesn't seem like it will work at first but soon the week is over and you have a clean house that only takes a few minutes a day.

get a bucket an fill it with water and a little bleach then start washing the walls the counter tops and so on working you way to the floor and move one room at a time hitting the most populouse rooms first. Last but not least clean the floors and throw out the trash.
