When it's nasty, the victim can end up being denied opportunities which may have given them a better life. A rumor that someone is a drug addict could keep them from getting a certain job. If you lie and say someone is abusive they may have trouble getting a date or even lose their children. They can unfairly destroy someones life.

Who said that?
Well, because for the victim, it can be very emotionally and psychologically draining. Some victims may even begin to internalize the lies. Rumors/gossip is a form of witchcraft and should not be tolerated.
I hate rumors. I don't listen to them much anymore. But I also learned that the hard way...somewhat.

Because those who spread rumors are perceived to be telling the truth, so the rumors travel and grow, which causes some innocent person's reputation to be ruined.

Rumors are typically 'half truths'. 'Half Truth' is wrost than a plain lie as one could take action assuming it to be complete truth. Rumors can mislead even those who have strong sense of judgement.
